Freakier Friday is directed by Nisha Ganatra, who has also worked on hit comedy shows like Fresh Off The Boat, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mindy Project and many more. The sequel follows both main characters from Freaky Friday 2003 film, a mother daughter duo who could not see eye to eye even after switching their bodies. Almost three decades later Anna and Tess have returned with more complications in life (two daughters), and a much needed lesson waiting for four of them which will bring them even closer.
The film begins with a quiet recap of what everyone has been up to since the OG film’s release in 2003. Jamie Lee Curtis’ Tess Coleman has been happily married, she now runs a podcast from her closet and is a published author, on the other hand, Lindsay Lohan’s Anna has stopped performing and now works for a pop star Emma while being a single mother to a strong-willed teenage daughter, Harper. When a food fight ensues at the school because of Harper and her British nemesis Lily, both Anna and Lily’s father Eric are called to the school.
As love stories go, it turns out to an adorable meet cute and the makers transition through their entire relationship of 6-8 months in a typical 2000s opening credits sequence. Eric and Anna decide to get married only months after their relationship and neither of their daughters are happy about it. The makers don’t waste time and jump into the world with Anna and Tess bickering while Harper and Lily not wanting to be sisters. While Anna and Tess have well developed past, the new film does well by reinventing them in different ways, while exploring new stories for the soon to be step sisters, Harper and Lily.

Similar to the OG film, they are forced to exchange bodies with each other through some supernatural force and now have to work together to go back to their own bodies. However, the humour in the new film keeps up to date with 2025 while also embodying the nostalgia of 2003. There are many jokes which make a come back from the original as Harper in Anna’s body tries to flirt with Jake and the latter trying to flirt with Tess. While Jakes remains as the eye-candy, Manny Jacinto also plays the part very well.
The opening scene also does well to sum up the story without spending much time on any of the characters. Despite having learned their lesson in the past, Tess and Anna can be seen struggling with boundaries of their own. But after having their bodies switched with the younger ones they bond again easily. On the other hand Harper and Lily soon to be step sister’s have a harder time learning their less, which takes up much of the screen time. However, the ending filled with call backs from the 2003 release make up for any detours.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan bring back the charm and the chaos effortlessly, meanwhile, Julia Butters as Harper Coleman and Sophia Hammons as Lily Davies are just as fun to watch playing four different characters. The chaos and climax of the film manage to be emotional and easy to follow. Jamie lee Curtis is especially incredible playing an emotional teenager in an old woman’s body.
Overall, Freakier Friday is fun to watch and is a complete family entertainer filled with nostalgia for millennials and relatable new content for the younger audience.
